Studio 103
Models, Drawings, and Sketches
At the beginning of our third and final freshman quarter, we were assigned a nearby street with much historic value and were told to study what we thought to be the main themes, whether in a specific area or along the entire twenty blocks of assigned steet space. Following our research, we were told to gather three "artifacts" that manifested our studied themes. With these three artifacts, I created a model that acted as a framework or display case for the objects.
My framework acted as a timeline, showing the initial development with the brick and rising potential for the area with the methodical and symmetrical stick pattern. Then, once alcohol bottles became more common, the potential and overall condition of the area began to worsen, as shown through the disordered sticks. The vertical anchor piece acts as benchmark for complete chaos as the sticks seemingly splinter out everywhere, crippling the sense of community that had once existed.

From the object framing system, students were assigned to teams of 4-5 to analyze designated open areas along the studied street. Upon completing the site research, each student considered their previous artifact displays while creating an urban repository for the local community.

After developing my ideas through the study models, I created a local green house/public garden. The space featured two living green walls which were both divided into interior and exterior sides for ample growing space. The space's slanted roof and primary green wall were also covered with operable solar panels by Ubiquitous which are clear as they collect light not visible to the human eye. This allows for a more sustainable space, as well as a controlled interior environment.
A neighboring roof was already shaped such that I could place a water tank to fill the roof's shape. The water would collect rain and flow into the connected green wall pipes. This feature furthers the building's sense of sustainability.
The artifacts were to be used again in some way in the final product. As seen in the abstracted detail to the upper left, the bottle artifact is used as part of the pipe system, the soccer ball is used as a sort of pot, and the brick is used as a part of the soil that holds the plants.
